Rubbermaid began life in 1920 as the Wooster Rubber Company manufacturing toy balloons. In 1933, Wooster received a patent for a red rubber dustpan and this initial kitchen product created the brand name now known as Rubbermaid. One year later, Wooster Rubber and Rubbermaid enterprises were merged to create Rubbermaid. Since that time, Rubbermaid has become the household name for rubber household products. Over the years, Rubbermaid continued its' expansion into food storage containers, trash cans, household accessories, auto accessories, and industrial plastics and in 1999, Rubbermaid was purchased creating the Newell Rubbermaid, Inc.
